Darren Hughes has given his backing to the idea of staging an International Rules Test in America.

The GAA and AFL are both looking at the possibility of playing a Test match in New York in the near future, something the Scotstown, Monaghan and Ireland star would love to see happen.

"I have absolutely no doubt when you see what the Fenway Classic in hurling achieved in terms of the numbers it pulled (nearly 28,000)," Hughes is quoted in the Irish Daily Star ahead of Sunday's Ulster club SFC final.

"The GAA and AFL seem determined to make that happen, whether that happens in 2016 or 2017.

"The fact Australia would be coming with a professional team to take us on, I really think that the American public would be intrigued to see a different sport in one of their main stadiums. And it would sell," he maintained.
