Big day for Heavin family

Derek Heavin of Castledaly and Westmeath

Sunday promises to be a huge day for father-and-son Derek and Daniel Heavin.

A Leinster SFC medalist with Westmeath in 2004 and an All-Ireland U21 winner five years earlier, Derek has battled back from an horrific knee injury sustained against Louth in the 2010 Leinster SFC semi-final to line out for Castledaly against hot favourites St. Loman's in Sunday's Westmeath SFC final at Cusack Park. The game will be preceded by the Westmeath MFC final between holders The Downs and a Rosemount/Castledaly combination which will feature 16-year-old Daniel.

It has already been a memorable year for the talented youngster who captained Moate Community School to their first North Leinster Post Primary Junior 'A' title at the expense of St. Pat's, Navan in January, and also won a Fr Manning Cup medal with the Westmeath U16s during the summer.

"It's going to be a great day," Derek said at the Castledaly press night last week.

"Since Castledaly merged with Rosemount at underage, it's after bringing him (Daniel) on a good bit."
