Tommy Lyons was back in the news yesterday when he gave character evidence in court for one of the three Anglo Irish Bank officials who were jailed for conspiring to hide bank accounts from Revenue.

Lawyers for ex-Anglo chief operations officer Tiarnan O'Mahoney read the court a letter on behalf of the former Dublin football manager, who said Mr O'Mahoney had given "great support" to Kilmacud Crokes GAA club, who Lyons managed to an All-Ireland club title in 1995.

Lawyers for former Anglo assistant manager Aoife Maguire, meanwhile, noted how she was an "extremely dedicated" member of Good Counsel camogie club in a "disadvantaged" area in Drimnagh and had served as a reference on job applications for many young club members.

O'Mahoney and Maguire were given jail terms of three years and 18 months respectively, while former Anglo Irish company secretary Bernard Daly was sentenced to two years after nearly seven hours of deliberations and a two-month trial.
