O'Brien fails to have ban overturned

Westmeath have suffered a second suspension blow ahead of Sunday's Leinster SHC quarter-final against Wexford.

Already resigned to being without Robbie Greville who received a straight red card against Laois, the Lake County must also plan without Niall O'Brien, who has failed to have a two-week ban lifted.

The Castletown-Geoghegan sharpshooter received the suspension after picking up a straight red card in last week's Leinster U21HC quarter-final defeat to Offaly. Had he being eligible for the U21 grade again next year, it would have applied at that level. Ironically, Greville was eligible to play for the U21s agains the Faithful County.

O'Brien's appeal to the Leinster Council last night proved unsuccessful.

Westmeath are also sweating on the fitness of Brendan Murtagh and Gary Greville (both struggling with quad muscle injuries) ahead of the visit of Liam Dunne's charges, who are strong favourites to progress to a semi-final meeting with Kilkenny.
