Aogan Ó Fearghail has described Joe Brolly's remarks about his native Cavan as "upsetting" and "nasty".

The GAA president noted at yesterday's launch of Newstalk's radio championship coverage that Marty Morrissey wasn't the only one to have been offended by Brolly's jibe before Cavan's Ulster SFC defeat to Monaghan last Sunday that the Breffni County's style of play was "as ugly" as the popular RTE commentator.

"Certainly, the players in Cavan and the administrators in Cavan try to promote a game and having it described as ugly and all of that, that's upsetting and that's nasty," Ó Fearghail said in the Irish News.

"I think the media does need to be objective, properly objective and see when things are good, and if things need to be criticised then, absolutely, have a go."

TV pundit Brolly has been warned by RTE that any future derogatory remarks will not be tolerated.

"Joe is acutely aware that his ill-conceived attempt at humour was both inappropriate and extremely hurtful and has no place in any broadcast. Joe is fully cognisant of the fact that similar comments in any future broadcast cannot and will not be tolerated," RTE Head of Sport Ryle Nugent said in a statement yesterday.
