McCallon blow for Westmeath

Westmeath's Mark McCallon closes in on Mickey Newman Meath during the NFL Div 2 game at Pairc Tailteann.

Westmeath have been dealt a blow with the news that defender Mark McCallon has left the panel.

The Garrycastle clubman has cited work commitments as the reason for opting off the panel and Westmeath manager Tom Cribbin admits that the loss of such an experienced defender is difficult for them to accept.

"Mark is obviously a very good player and has done well for us, but we have to move on," Cribbin told the Westmeath Independent.

"There are a number of good young players in the set-up, who are showing good form at the moment, and we are happy with the group of lads we have. It's unfortunate to lose him, but it's up to someone else to take his place and produce the goods."

Westmeath are already without former captain Kieran Gavin who is out with a long term injury, while promising youngster Ryan Caffrey has also opted off the panel and will spend the summer in the United States.

Denis Glennon is in a race against time to be fit for the Louth game as he recovers from a fractured hand.
