Roscommon's joy at securing promotion to the top flight for the first time since 2003 has been tempered by the news that Seanie McDermott is set to miss the Division 2 final against Down on April 26.

The experienced Western Gaels defender received a straight red card in the dying moments of the Rossies' 2-13 to 0-12 win over Westmeath today for an off-the-ball incident, which was brought to referee Fergal Kelly's attention by one of his linesmen.

It remains to be seen if Roscommon will appeal the red card, which comes with an automatic one-match ban.

The victory in Cusack Park completes a memorable weekend for the Westerners who captured their fourth Connacht U21 title in six seasons at Galway's expense yesterday. This afternoon, John Evans' seniors emulated Monaghan's achievement in 2013 and '14 by securing back-to-back promotions from Divisions 3 and 2.
