Royals second-half showing pleases Menton

Meath's Bryan Menton

Bryan Menton's contribution of 1-2 off the bench at half-time was crucial to Meath's 2-11 to 0-10 Division 2 victory over table toppers Down last night.

Speaking to Setanta Sports after picking up the man-of-the-match accolade, the Donaghmore/Ashbourne clubman revealed the most pleasing aspect of the win from the Royals' perspective was their strong second-half showing against the wind.

"The lads put in a good shift, put in a serious effort defensively," he commented.

"The last couple of games actually, we've dealt with playing against the wind better. And then in the second halves, against Roscommon and Laois, we didn't play well with the wind surprisingly so.

"Conditions are one thing but we're just happy to finish strong in the second-half because in the last couple of games we haven't.

"We had a lot of fresh lads to come off the bench, myself included. I was kind of happy to have just 35 minutes because I've been suffering with a little injury in the calves but I'm happy to have a good 35 minutes there, the same as Michael Newman and a few others that came on.

"We've had four games now on the trot with one to go. I suppose legs are tired and that's mainly the purpose for having a strong bench tonight."

A local derby against Cavan is next on the agenda for the Menton and Meath in Pairc Tailteann next Sunday.

"We've a lot of players coming back and it leaves it an interesting final day next weekend.

"We've Cavan in Navan so it's going to be an interesting final day and then there's a good break to championship so hopefully we can get a good bit of running into the legs then and everybody will be flying fit for championship."
