Cork say no to naming rights

The new look Pairc Ui Chaoimh

An online petition to have the new Pairc Ui Chaoimh named after two former Cork footballers will not be agreed to by the Cork County Board.

A campaign has been launched on facebook, which has received 2,000 likes, to get one of the stands at the redeveloped Pairc Ui Chaoimh named after the late Mick McCarthy and John Kerins, both of who represented the county footballers and tragically passed away at a young age.

The Cork County Board have been given the green light for a massive redevelopment project at the famed old grounds, but they have stressed that naming rights are not under consideration.

Balgooly's JJ Hurley is the man behind the petition and he feels that even though there are many great Cork players that would be in line for having a stand named after them, he feels that both McCarthy and Kerins are exceptional.

"I can certainly see their (County Board) point," Hurley told the Southern Star. "With names such as the late Con Murphy, Sean McCarthy and JJ Walsh coming to mind, but I do think McCarthy and Kerins are unique," said Hurley.

"They were lost at such a young age, at least others had the opportunity to fulfil a lifetime of service to the association."
