Walsh Cup: Canning injury mars Galway win

January 25, 2015

Galway's Joe Canning

Galway 2-22
Offaly 1-13

Joe Canning's first appearance of the season for Galway was ended prematurely as Galway registered a facile win over Offaly at O'Connor Park.

Introduced after half-time, the Portumna sharpshooter scored a goal with his first touch, but was forced off with a finger injury three minutes from the end and could be a doubt for the start of the Allianz League.

The Tribesmen encountered little resistance from a poor Offaly team as they set up a semi-final meeting with Carlow next weekend. Picking up from where he left off against Westmeath, Jason Flynn found the net to ease them into a 1-8 to 0-2 lead.

Shane Dooley had a penalty saved by Colm Callinan as Galway took an unassailable 1-14 to 0-5 lead into the break.

Canning's major extended their advantage to 2-18 to 0-5 before Dooley managed a consolation goal for Brian Whelahan's men, who have a lot of work to do before they face a high-flying Laois side in the opening round of the Allianz League.
