Former Westmeath underage footballer Alan Sheehan won't forget yesterday in a hurry after his Bradford City side recorded a famous FA Cup victory over Chelsea.
The Athlone man was an unused sub for the Bantams who came from 2-0 down at Stamford Bridge to win 4-2 against the Premier League leaders. It has been described as one of the biggest upsets in FA Cup history with the Bradford squad having been assembled for the princely sum of £17,500. By contrast, Chelsea had over £100 million worth of talent on show.
After the final whistle, Sheehan swapped jerseys with Chelsea's Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas - a souvenir he will no doubt treasure for the rest of his life.
The 28-year-old was involved in Westmeath underage development squads with future seniors David Duffy, Michael Curley, Gavin Hoey and David Glennon around the turn of the millennium before joining Leicester City in 2003.
The former Irish U21 international joined Leeds United in 2008 and had spells at Swindon Town and Notts County before signing for Bradford on a free transfer last June.
