Derry GAA has been plunged into mourning after a player collapsed and died during a club training session last night.

The tragedy happened at the Roe Valley Leisure Centre when 32-year-old father-of-one Steven Deeney collapsed while training with his beloved St. Aidan's, Magilligan. Despite being treated at the scene, Steven was later pronounced dead at Causeway Hospital in Coleraine.

A statement from his club said: "It's with deep shock and a heavy, heavy heart that we, as a club, committee members, players and the entire community send on our deepest and heartfelt sympathies to the entire Deeney family on the passing of Steven.

"A father, son, and brother to them. And one of the Magilligan GAA group. May you rest in peace with God above. Chuid eile i siochain."
