The Cork ladies footballers' achievement in winning nine of the last ten All-Irelands was recognised tonight when they were named RTE 'Team of the Year'.

Eamonn Ryan and his charges attracted the most public votes but James O'Donoghue, Richie Hogan and Briege Corkery lost out to Rory McIlroy in the 'Sports Person of the Year' category.

The Cork Ladies beat off competition from the Kilkenny hurlers, the Kerry footballers and their Cork camogie colleagues, among others.

Eamonn Fitzmaurice, Brian Cody and Ryan were in the running for the 'Manager of the Year' accolade but Joe Schmidt walked away with that gong after guiding Ireland to Six Nations glory.

Recently retired Irish rugby legend Brian O'Driscoll was honoured with the RTÉ/Irish Sports Council Hall of Fame Award.
