McEnaney: let's try two refs in hurling

Referees' chief Pat McEnaney is open to experimenting with two referees in hurling.

Speaking at the launch of the GAA's new referee recruitment drive yesterday, the Monaghan man told The Irish Daily Mail: "It's something that I could see happening. It's definitely one thing that I'd like to have a look at, maybe for the League.

"Let's have a look at two referees. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. But let's try it."

Inter-county referee Alan Kelly took a different view, however, and is adamant that two match officials would not work.

"It adds to the excitement in hurling, that little bit of doubt where players are going up challenging for a ball, whereas if we went with that it would be too stop-start," the Galway official opined.

"I think you would see too much of what goes on, players like to get in and get involved among each other as well and they don't like to be pulled back for every little thing.

"I don't think that there should be two referees."
