There is speculation that Fine Gael want Colm Cooper to run in the next General Election in the new Kerry five-seat constituency.

The brilliant Kingdom forward, who missed out on this year's All-Ireland success due to a cruciate ligament injury, hails from a well-known Fine Gael family in Killarney and could be tempted to run for the Dail when the next General Election takes place in early 2016.

A Fine Gael source said in the Irish Daily Mirror: "Kerry is a five-seater now and Jimmy Deenihan and Brendan Griffin are set to run again.

"But we can't ignore how many votes The Gooch could pull in for us. His dad, the late Michael Coope,r was chairman of the local Fine Gael Killarney branch.

"So Colm's credentials are impeccable. He would no doubt pull in more votes than Brendan Griffin and the party is well aware he has threatened to quit on a number of occasions over the past weeks."

The same newspaper is also reporting that Fianna Fail are considering approaching Cooper's former Kerry team-mate Darragh O Se and Clare legend Anthony Daly to run for them. Daly, who managed the Dublin hurlers for six years, could yet run in the capital because of the party's need for a female candidate in the Banner County.
