Kilmallock's Gavin O'Mahony says "a bit of cuteness" from Conor Ryan resulted in his red card in Sunday's Munster club hurling final.

Limerick star O'Mahony was dismissed twelve minutes from the end of the thrilling provincial final victory over Cratloe for his part in an off-the-ball incident involving Clare hurler Ryan.

O'Mahony's straight red card will rule him out of the All-Ireland club semi-final meeting with Portaferry of Down in February.

"It was probably a bit of cuteness on his behalf," he is quoted in The Irish Independent. "There was a bit of gamesmanship. I was already on a yellow. There was nothing in it. The top of my hurley had been broken. It probably looked desperate.

"I thought it was gone. I had given up. Credit to these guys. I am indebted to them now. I was sick to the pit of my stomach watching it.

"I've been lucky enough, with Limerick and Kilmallock, to always be in the heat of the battle so you can have some influence but, Jesus, what prayers I didn't say there at the finish of normal time."
