'Hub' calls it a day

Tyrone's Kevin Hughes

Former Tyrone midfielder Kevin Hughes has brought the curtain down on his illustrious football career.

The 34-year-old announced his decision to retire after helping his beloved Killeeshil retain their intermediate status thanks to a 1-10 to 0-11 victory over Tattyreagh last Sunday. It wasn't an entirely happy occasion for 'Hub', however, as he was sent off on a second yellow card in the closing stages. His Killeeshil team-mate John McMullan and Tattyreagh's James Darcy were also dismissed by Brocagh referee Donal Dorman.

Hughes played adult club football for 19 years, with the highlight coming a year ago when Killeeshil won the Tyrone JFC title. They went on to reach the Ulster club JFC final, only to lose to Emyvale of Monaghan.

With Tyrone, 'Hub' won an All-Ireland minor medal in 1998 and followed up with All-Ireland U21 success in 2000 and '01 before winning three All-Ireland senior medals in '03, '05 and '08. He was man of the match in the Red Hands' maiden All-Ireland final victory over Armagh in 2003.

He announced his inter-county retirement in January 2012.
