"You deserved that you little b****x"

Dublin legend Brian Mullins had little sympathy for Joe Brolly after Meath's Colm Coyle lashed out at him for blowing kisses to the crowd in a game at Celtic Park many years ago.

In his Gaelic Life column this week which is headlined 'The joy of the goal', Joe recalls how his trademark goal celebration had resulted in him having his nose broken twice and getting a kick from Coyle.

However, the then Derry manager Mullins clearly felt the RTE pundit had been asking for it!

"In the last minute, I lobbed the 'keeper for the winning goal in a bad-tempered National League playoff," Brolly recounts.

"It was the very same 'keeper who had previously described their winning goal in Leinster as being better than sex. I tousled his hair as he sat on the ground (he fell backwards as he struggled to reach the lob) and asked: 'Was that better than sex?'

"Then, I commenced to blow kisses to the crowd, interrupted only by Colm Coyle booting me. As I left the changing room afterwards to be taken to Altnagelvin (Hospital) to have the wound stitched, team manager Brian Mullins consoled me with the words 'You deserved that you little b****x'."
