An Ulster SFC success is the target for Caolan Mooney who is set to ressurrect his gaelic football career with Down.

The 21-year-old recently called time on a three-year stint in Australia with Collingwood and is keen to impress new Mourne manager Jim McCorry.

"Playing for Down was a big factor in coming home, along with getting back to my club Rostrevor," he revealed The Irish News.

"I wasn't really enjoying life in Australia any more and I was starting to notice that there is a transitional period and redevelopment going on in Down football at the minute. I wanted to be part of that.

"I have seen a lot of young players coming through recently so I felt that, at 21, it was the right time for me to come home and make a go of it.

"Anyone that plays club or county wants to win everything they can.

"Obviously an All-Ireland would be the pinnacle of but Down supporters have been starved of an Ulster title so that is where we have to start. 1994 is too long."

Mooney gave his backing to Jim McCorry who was recently ratified as James McCartan's senior football successor.

"Jim knows Down football inside out.

"He has been with Kilcoo for a long time. He has been involved with Gaelic games a lot longer that I have even been alive so that experience has to mean something.

"There is a new era emerging and it will be good to get a new manager in who can give his views on things and someone who can harnass the young lads.

"Look, I'm not going to say I am guaranteed a place on the Down squad. I am just another player who has to prove himself to a new manager. I am looking forward to the challenge."
