Durcan's kick-outs so important, says Whelan

Ciaran Whelan believes Donegal goalkeeper Paul Durcan holds the keys to unlocking the Kingdom.

Writing in The Herald, the former Dublin midfielder says Kerry will need to find a way to counteract Durcan's kick-outs if they are to have a chance of winning their 37th All-Ireland.

"Durcan's kick-out strategy is designed to expose the opposition defence," he noted.

"Durcan's variation in his kick-outs is designed to pull the defence out of position. He will look to go down the wings on every second or third kick. When the ball lands, Donegal have 12 players goal side of where the ball is."

In tipping Donegal, Whelan feels Kerry will struggle to cope with their style of play.

"There is more consistency balancing out in Donegal's favour. Kerry look a little bit more vulnerable and history indicates that they have struggled in the past to deal with this style of defensive play.

"Talent may win games but teamwork and intelligence win championships."
