Connelly the new favourite for Mayo vacancy

Joint Mayo managers Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes celebrate the final whistle in the 2006 Cadbury All-Ireland U21FC final against Cork - INPHO

Speculation is rife that Noel Connelly has overtaken Kevin McStay in the race to become Mayo senior football manager.

The deadline for nominations will close at 11pm tomorrow night (Thursday) and 1996 All-Ireland final captain Connelly is now considered to be in pole position to take over from James Horan.

Former Castlebar Mitchels manager Pat Holmes is understood to be part of Connelly's backroom team and the pair guided the county to All-Ireland U21 success back in 2006.

Holmes previously managed the Connacht outfit from 2000 to 2002 and and won the league title in 2001.

Connelly and McStay met with County Board officials in the last week to confirm their interest in the vacancy.

It is believed that Liam McHale would be involved as assistant manager in McStay's plans.
