Mayo's disappointment at losing today's nail-biting All-Ireland SFC semi-final replay has been compounded by the news that James Horan has stepped down as senior football manager.

Horan was non-committal about his future shortly after the final whistle in the Gaelic Grounds but tonight the Mayo County Board have confirmed that he is leaving the job after four successful years.

"Mayo Senior Football Manager James Horan has just announced that he is to step down from his position as Manager of the Mayo Senior Team," read a tweet from the Connacht county's official twitter account.

The former star player will be a hard act to follow having guided the county to four Connacht SFC titles and two All-Ireland SFC final appearances.

Ultimately, however, he was unable to get Mayo over the finishing line in their quest for a first Sam Maguire Cup success in 62 years.
