Waterford GAA supporters group Club Déise has hit out at comments made by former manager Niall Carew.

In a statement released to Waterford clubs, Carew who hit the headlines earlier this week after he scooped €170,000 in a bet, called for a new fundraising committee independent of Club Déise to be formed specifically for football.

Carew issued a statement to Waterford clubs and the county board and stated that better structures needed to be in place to give the county football team a chance to flourish.

However, Club Déise have released a statement of their own denying Carew's allegations that the supporters group catered for the hurlers more than the county footballers.

Some of the statement reads: The committee of Club Déise, the Waterford GAA Supporters Club are very sad to have to take this opportunity to say how very disappointed we are by the tone and context of comments made by Mr Niall Carew recently in his letter to the Waterford clubs and in interviews to the National Media.

"Club Déise was set up in 2008 to assist in the development of Waterford GAA squads at all ages so that they can fulfil their potential at the highest level in all competitions."

The statement added: "With regard to Mr Carew's allegations that he was turned down when he approached Club Déise for assistance, no Club Déise officer has any recollection of Mr Carew speaking with them and no written request was ever received by Club Déise from Mr Carew. Statements by Mr Carew to the media stating otherwise are incorrect."
