Mulholland steps down

Galway are the latest county to find themselves without a senior football manager following Alan Mulholland's decision not to seek another term.

A statement from the Galway county board in the past few minutes read: "Alan Mulholland has decided not to exercise his option of another year as Galway Senior Football Manager for 2015."

The Salthill-Knocknacarra clubman and former county star was appointed senior manager in succession to Tomas O Flatharta in October 2011 on the back of guiding the Galway minors and U21s to All-Ireland glory in 2007 and 2011 respectively. And while his three-year term didn't yield silverware, there were clear signs of progress in this year's championship campaign, with an All-Ireland quarter-final place being secured for the first time since 2008.

After refusing to speculate about his future as manager following the defeat to Kerry earlier this month, Mulholland has now decided to stand down.

Mulholland, who was handed a further two-year term last November, was assisted by former players Paul Clancy, Declan Meehan, Liam Sammon and Brian Talty. Their names will inevitably be linked with the manager's job now, as will that of Alan Flynn, who managed the Tribesmen to an All-Ireland U21 title last year.
