McEntee rules himself out of Down running

Tony McEntee will not be succeeding James McCartan as Down senior football manager.

McCartan, who won All-Irelands as a player in 1991 and '94 and brought Down to the 2010 All-Ireland final as manager, announced his departure on Saturday after five years at the Mourne County helm.

Former Armagh star McEntee is one of those who has since been mentioned as a possible successor but the Crossmaglen Rangers man has moved quickly to distance himself from the post.

McEntee led his home club to two All-Ireland club titles and is currently in charge of Dublin outfit St Brigid's, as well as having pressing work and family commitments.

"Obviously county team management is a very demanding role and you need to give it everything," he told The Belfast Telegraph.

"I would wish whoever takes over Down well and I think that James McCartan has served his county superbly both as a player and as a manager."
