Donegal's Michael Murphy and Stephen Maher of Laois have today been announced as the Opel GAA GPA Players of the Month for May in football and hurling respectively.

The selections, chosen by the inter-county playing body, recognise the individual contributions made by both players for their respective counties during the month.

Donegal Captain Michael Murphy put in a sterling Man of the Match performance against Derry, helping his county clinch a place in the Ulster SFC semi-finals. In particular, his influence in the third quarter of the match was crucial in driving Donegal's comeback against Derry in the match.

Stephen Maher and his Laois teammates almost pulled off a massive upset in the Leinster SHC clash against Galway. Despite losing the match by a two-point margin, Maher scored 0-3 on the day, and was instrumental in driving his county's spirited performance against the Tribesmen, while he was in sparkling form during the leinster Round Robin series.

Commenting on the announcement, GAA President Liam o'Neill said: "The onset of our championships brings with it stellar performances and our two winners this month certainly contributed to the bright start we've had to both the football and hurling championships"

"Michael Murphy has long been a leader for Donegal despite his relative youth and his latest offering against Derry was in keeping with his leadership qualities. I'm particularly pleased for Stephen Maher whose display against Galway was excellent. Laois' continue to progress and he has a role to play in that process. Congratulations to both players and thanks once again to the GPA and Opel for their role in and support of these awards."

Dave Sheeran, Managing Director, Opel Ireland, added: "We would like to congratulate Michael and Stephen on their outstanding performances during the month of May. They are both deserving winners of the GAA GPA Players of the Month for May, proudly sponsored by Opel."

Commenting on the announcement, Dessie Farrell, CEO of the Gaelic Players Association said: "Congratulations to Michael and Stephen on being recognised by their fellow players for their performances in May. Our championships have opened very brightly which augurs very well for the season ahead. Michael Murphy is one of the great talents in football and once again played a leading role in his county's hard-fought victory over Derry. His wonderful second half score from a sideline kick shows the depth of his talent. For the second year running Laois hurlers have issued a serious statement in the Leinster SHC, which is a testimony to the work being carried out in the county. Stephen was a pivotal figure during Laois' preliminary round successes and follows in Cahir Healy's footsteps by being honoured with the Opel monthly award."

"Thanks to all our members who voted and to Dave and the Opel team for their excellent support for the Awards scheme."
