Doherty: Derry keeping spotlight off Donegal

April 24, 2014

Donegal manager John Joe Doherty
John Joe Doherty believes Derry's league success could leave them vulnerable to a Donegal ambush in the Ulster SFC.

The neighbouring counties will both be in action at Croke Park on Sunday against Dublin and Monaghan respectively in the Allianz League Division 1 and 2 finals. Derry's progress has been such this spring that they have been installed as favourites to beat the 2012 All-Ireland champions at Celtic Park on May 25.

But former Donegal boss Doherty feels this could suit Jim McGuinness' men, stating in the Irish News: "Derry's success is good for Donegal. It is keeping the attention off Donegal.

"Celtic Park is not going to be an easy place to go to for the first game in the Ulster championship, but the preparation of the team has been low key and it will undoubtedly be a very interesting match."

He added: "The team is just back from their training camp in Portugal and this (Division 2) final is an added bonus before they head into the hard graft ahead of the championship."
