Leahy wields the axe

John Leahy has caused a storm in Tipperary by axing five key players from the Premier County senior ladies football squad.

It has been reported that the former All-Ireland SHC medallist opted to drop the influential quintet after overseeing a team meeting to flesh out players' views on training and team preparations.

Vice captain Jennifer Grant, Mairead Morrissey (an All Star nominee in 2013), Kelly Hackett, Samantha Lambert and Patricia Hickey have all been told they are surplus to requirements, all five having played against Cavan in last year's All-Ireland intermediate ladies championship final.

News of the axing did not go down well, with just five players believed to have attended training in Bansha last week as the rest of the squad boycotted the session in support of the banished five.

New manager Leahy now finds himself in a very difficult situation as he tries to get a team together for the NFL Division Three semi-final against Armagh on Sunday week.
