Guernsey Gaels gave an excellent account of themselves before succumbing to Fenagh of Carlow by 1-9 to 1-16 in today's Leinster club JFC first round clash.

The historic tie took place in Maastricht, Holland which is the 'county ground' of Europe GAA. A major upset looked to be on the cards at half-time when the Channel Islanders - who recently won the European championship - led by 1-7 to 0-4.

But the greater fitness of the Carlow intermediate winners came to the fore in the second period as they fought back to take the win against the ex-pats.

This was the first year for a club from Europe to play in one of the provincial competitions. Tweet
