Earley opposed to indigenous Aussie team idea

Ireland's International Rules manager Paul Earley says Australia shouldn't field an indigenous team.

There are suggestions that the Aussies are considering sending an indigenous side to face Ireland in the 2013 International Rules Series in October, but Earley says he would not support such a move:

"The whole concept of the series is that the best Gaelic footballers take on the best Australian Rules players, and that's the challenge that interests both sides," the Ireland manager is quoted in The Irish Independent.

"They haven't made a decision and I know the GAA will have their own opinion on it, but it's not ideal to water down a team in any way.

"I'm sure they could send maybe five or six different teams and there wouldn't be too much between them, but it would be like us saying maybe we'll only pick players from Leinster."

Earley was responding to AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou's admission on Channel Nine's Footy Show yesterday: "Yes, it is one of the options we are now considering. We have canvassed the views of indigenous players."
