LAOCHRA GAEL - 'SEAMUS MOYNIHAN'
New Series of Laochra Gael
7th MARCH AT 8.00PM
Seamus Moynihan played senior football for Kerry from 1992 to 2006 and he's widely regarded as one of the best players ever to wear the green and gold jersey. After virtually singlehandedly bringing St Brendan's College to Hogan Cup success in 1992 he was called up to the senior county team that same year and he still feels priviliged to have lined out alongside one of his heroes, Jack O'Shea. It was an inauspicious start, however, as they were shocked by Clare but as Dara Ó Cinnéide recalls, rather than being thrown onto the scrapheap, the team would be built around the Glenflesk man in the ensuing years.
His joy and relief at wining the Munster title for the first time in 1996 is still clearly evident, perhaps even more so than his first All-Ireland medal the following year. In the year 2000 he was switched back to man the full back position but was glad to wear any Kerry jersey and his exploits with Oisín McConville and Padraig Joyce are recalled here, as he captained Kerry to All-Ireland success after a replay.
The rest of his career was blighted by injury and he tells us of the various ailments he had and of his efforts to overcome the injuries. His motivation to play in 2006 was simple - he wanted to win an All-Ireland medal for his new born son, Jamie. As well as Dara Ó Cinnéide, we hear telling contributions from Peter Canavan and Sean Ó Domhnaill.
