Murphy on the mend

Waterford's Eoin Murphy
Waterford defender Eoin Murphy is said to be recovering well from a life-threatening head injury he sustained in a weekend club game.
Murphy was admitted to Waterford Regional Hospital after fracturing his skull and being knocked unconscious following an accidental blow to the head with a hurl while playing for his club Shamrocks against Abbeyside in Cappoquin last Friday.
And while it has been confirmed that he won't require surgery, he is expected to remain in Cork University Hospital, where he was transferred to over the weekend, for another few days so that doctors can continue to monitor his condition.
Murphy, who was wearing a helmet when he suffered the injury, is now expected to miss Waterford's opening Munster SHC defence against Limerick on June 12 and there is even a possibility that he may not be able to play again.
He can take encouragement, however, from the fact that Limerick full back Gavin O'Mahony made a full recovery after suffering a similar injury when he was assaulted on a Cork city street in 2005.
Better news for Waterford manager Davy Fitzgerald is that All-Star forward John Mullane is expected to be fit for the provincial semi-final against the newly-crowned NHL Division 2 champions.
Mullane fractured his finger playing for his club De La Salle on Sunday, but won't be out of action for any longer than four weeks.
