Doherty resigns as Donegal manager

Former Donegal manager John Joe Doherty
John Joe Doherty's term as Donegal manager has come to an abrupt halt after he informed his county board of his decision to resign this morning.
The former All-Ireland winning corner back was appointed after a drawn out and at times controversial process at the end of 2008 in succession to Brian McIver.
Donegal failed to gain promotion from NFL Division 2 in the spring and lost to Down after extra time in the Ulster championship, before going down tamely to Armagh last Saturday in the qualifiers.
Jim McGuinness, who led the county U21 footballers to an All-Ireland final appearance in May and was a contender for the senior job, is seen as the early frontrunner to replace Doherty.
