Three senior club finals down for decision

December 02, 2008
Barring draws in the AIB GAA Leinster, Munster and Ulster (replay) football senior club finals, the curtain will come down on the 2008 senior campaign on Sunday next. Parnell Park, Dublin will host the Leinster football final; the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick will host the Munster decider while the Ulster final replay will be in Brewster Park, Enniskillen. Sunday AIB Leinster GAA Football Senior Club Championship Final: Kilmacud Crokes (Dublin) v Rhode (Offaly), Parnell Park, 2.00pm. St.Vincent's (4) Kilmacud Crokes (2) UCD (2) Thomas Davis (2) Erin's Isle (1) Parnells (1) Na Fianna (1) and St. Brigid's (1) have brought the Leinster title back to Dublin on 14 occasions while it has wintered four times in Offaly, courtesy of Walsh Island (2), Ferbane (1) and Gracefield (1). Now the big question is whether it's the turn of Dublin or Offaly to land the 2008 prize when Kilmacud Crokes and Rhode meet in Sunday's final. Kilmacud have won the title twice previously (1994 and 2005) while Rhode are seeking their first title. They are, in fact, attempting to become the first Offaly club to win the title since Ferbane were successful in 1986. This will be Rhode's second attempt in three seasons to win the crown, having lost to Kildare champions, Moorefield in the 2006 final. Kilmacud, who won the All-Ireland title in 1995, were successful again in Leinster in 2005 but subsequently lost the All-Ireland semi-final to Salthill-Knocknacarra (Galway). Paths to the final: Kilmacud Crokes 0-13 Celbridge (Kildare) 0-8 Kilmacud Crokes 1-13 Newtown Blues (Louth) 1-9 Kilmacud Crokes 1-11 Navan O'Mahony's (Meath) 0-7 Three straight-forward wins for Kilmacud, during which they conceded an average of just 0-9 which indicates how strong their defence has been. But then that's to be expected since it's led by Dublin defenders Paul Griffin and Kevin Nolan. Further up, Dublin stars, Darren and Johnny Magee, Ray Cosgrove, Mark Vaughan as well as Longford's Brian Kavanagh and Fermanagh's Liam McBarron bring loads of big time craft and experience to their efforts. Vaughan has scored 1-19 in the three games while Kavanagh has added 0-8. *** Rhode 2-9 Portlaoise (Laois) 1-10 Rhode 3-9 Eire Og (Carlow) 0-4 Rhode have hit five goals in their two Leinster games so far, two against a highly-rated Portlaoise side and three more against Eire Og, a club with a great pedigree in the Leinster championship. Niall McNamee is Rhode's top marksman, scoring 1-7 (1-4 from play) against Eire Og and 0-3 (0-2 from play) against Portlaoise. Teenage sensation, Anton Sullivan (17) scored two goals against Eire Og, having also scored a crucial point after coming on as a sub against Portlaoise. Rhode are captained by former Offaly star, Roy Malone. Flashback....2005 Leinster semi-final Kilmacud Crokes 1-9 Rhode 2-6 Kilmacud Crokes 2-6 Rhode 1-7 (replay) It was certainly a close call when these clubs last clashed in the Leinster championship. They drew first time out before Kilmacud edged home by two points in the replay with Mark Davoren (1-2), Ray Cosgrove (1-1), Mark Vaughan (0-2) and Johnny Magee (0-1) on the mark for the Dublin champions. Niall McNamee (0-5), Paraic Sullivan (1-0) and Alan McNamee (0-2) replied for Rhode. AIB Leinster GAA Football Senior Club Championship Final- Where the titles have gone? 6 - Portlaoise (Laois) 5 - Eire Og (Carlow) 4 - St.Vincent's (Dublin) 2 - Kilmacud Crokes (Dublin) 2 - Thomas Davis (Dublin) 2 - UCD (Dublin) 2 - Walsh Island (Offaly) 2 - Walterstown (Meath) 1 - Baltinglass (Wicklow) 1 - Dunshaughlin (Meath) 1 - Erin's Isle (Dublin) 1 - Ferbane (Offaly) 1 - Gracefield (Offaly) 1 - Moorefield (Kildare) 1 - Na Fianna (Dublin) 1 - O'Hanrahan's (Carlow) 1 - Parnells (Dublin) 1 - Summerhill (Meath) 1 - Raheens (Kildare) 1 - Rathnew (Wicklow) 1 - St.Brigid's (Dublin) County breakdown: Dublin 14; Carlow 6; Laois 6; Offaly 4; Meath 4; Wicklow 2, Kildare 2. NOVEL PAIRING IN MUNSTER FINAL AIB Munster GAA Football Senior Club Championship Final: Dromcollogher-Broadford (Limerick) v Kilmurry Ibrickane (Clare), Gaelic Grounds, 2.00pm Cork and Kerry clubs have dominated the Munster scene over the years but this year it's the turn of Limerick and Clare to take centre stage as Dromcollogher-Broadford and Kilmurry-Ibrickane head for next Sunday's provincial decider at the Gaelic Grounds. It will be Dromcollogher-Broadford's first outing in the Munster final but the manner of their victory over Munster and All-Ireland specialists Nemo Rangers in the semi-final suggests that they are well ready for the challenge. They will be looking to the likes Jason Stokes, Michael Reidy, Sean Buckley and Garret Noonan for inspiration against Kilmurry-Ibrickane who are seeking to win the title for the second time in five seasons, having previously triumphed in 2004 when they beat Stradbally in a replayed final. Other than Doonbeg, who won in 1998, they are the only Clare club to have won the title. Thomond College (1977) were the only team to bring the Munster crown back to Limerick. Paths to the final: Kilmurry-Ibrickane (Clare) 2-6 Galtee Rovers (Tipperary) 0-4. Having received a walkover in the quarter-final when Waterford failed to produce champions in time for the provincial campaign, Kilmurry-Ibrickane were easy winners over Tipperary champions Galtee Rovers in the semi-final. They led by 1-5 to 0-1 at half-time in a game where Noel Downes and Paul O'Connor scored their goals. That, coupled with a secure defence, enabled the Clare champions to see out the game comfortably. *** Dromcollogher-Broadford (Limerick) 0-7 Nemo Rangers (Cork) 0-6. It may have come as no surprise to the Limerick champions but this result shook the rest of the football worlds as 7/1 outsiders, Dromcollogher-Broadford held their nerve to see off the challenge of Nemo Rangers, the most successful club in the history of the club championships. Sean Buckley (0-3) and Michael Reidy (0-2) top-scored for the Limerick champions who turned in an excellent all-round performance. AIB Munster GAA Football Senior Club Championship- Where the titles have gone? 14 - Nemo Rangers (Cork) 4 - St.Finbarr's (Cork) 3 - Castlehaven (Cork) 3 - Dr.Crokes (Kerry) 3 - UCC (Cork) 2 - Castleisland (Kerry) 2 - Laune Rangers (Kerry) 1 - An Ghaeltacht (Kerry) 1 - Austin Stacks (Kerry) 1 - Doonbeg (Clare) 1 - East Kerry (Kerry) 1 - Kilmurry-Ibrickane (Clare) 1 - O'Donovan Rossa (Cork) 1- Thomond College (Limerick) County breakdown: Cork 25; Kerry 10; Clare 2; Limerick 1. AIB Ulster GAA Football Senior Club Championship Final: It's back to Brewster Park, Enniskillen for Ballinderry (Derry) and Crossmaglen Rangers (Armagh) next Sunday for the replay of the AIB GAA Ulster senior football final after the sides drew 1-10 each last Sunday. Throw in will be at 3.45pm and extra-time will be played in the event of the game again finishing level in ordinary time. Crossmaglen, for whom Oisin McConville scored 1-2, led by five points with seven minutes remaining but Ballinderry staged a great comeback with a goal from Niall McCusker grabbing a late goal and a replay.
