November 18, 2008
Leinster Special JHC 16/11/2008  Sarsfields (Newbridge) 1-9 Killeigh 0-9 Killeigh's hopes of winning this competition and qualifying for a trip to Europe ended with this 3 point defeat, on a day when they travelled to County Kildare, but lost their scoring touch. Scoring Mark Egan opened the scoring with a point, and added another after the home side equalised to leave the score 2 points to 1in the opening minutes. Sarsfields then broke away, and scored their all important goal, which proved decisive in the end. Killeigh had to thank keeper Ger Mc Donald for a number of fine saves to prevent the opposing forwards building a big lead. At the other end Killeigh were finding it hard to raise a flag, when a number of chances from placed balls, and from play were not converted. Killeigh got into their stride by scoring 3 points, from Mark Egan again, Andrew Brophy, and Paul O'Rourke whose goal bound shot was deflected over the bar by the Sarsfields keeper who made a number of fine saves. Just on half time Sarsfields scored a point from play, leaving the scores tied at 1-2 to 0-5.   Killeigh introduced a few subs at half time, but Sarsfields scored 4 points to lead by the same margin, 1-6 to 0-5, and might have stretched their lead but for excellent defending by Ger Mc Donald and his defenders. Mark Egan managed to reduce the deficit with two points, but Killeigh were unable to score the goal they needed to ensure victory. Sarsfields managed to get a couple of points at during the second half, and though Mark Egan , who was top scorer, and sub. Gavin Shiels added points, Sarsfields held out against strong pressure to win by a goal, 1-9 to 0-9.   Scorers. Mark Egan 0-6, Gavin Shiels, Andrew Brophy, and Paul O'Rourke each added a point.   There were a number of Offaly exiles involved with Sarsfields, which made it seem like home. Afterwards all adjourned to the excellent clubhouse for a few pints and a bit of craic. Thanks to Sarsfields for their hospitality, and good luk in the competition.
