Trio remain in contention for Galway job

Noel Lane
The race for the Galway hurling manager's post has been reduced to three following a series of interviews in recent days. The trio left in the running to succeed Ger Loughnane are Noel Lane, Michael Bond and John McIntyre. That means Gerry Spellman, Jimmy Heverin, Anthony Cunningham, Vincent Mullins and Mattie Murphy are out of the race. It's understood that the selection committee will meet again tonight to decide who to put forward for ratification at tomorrow night's hurling board meeting. The three remaining candidates all have extensive inter-county management experience. Lane managed Galway for two years in 2001 and 2002, guiding them to the All-Ireland final at his attempt when they lost to Tipperary. Bond led Offaly to a famous All-Ireland triumph in 1998 after he replaced Michael 'Babs' Keating in mid-season, while former Tipperary player McIntyre also managed the Faithful County on two separate occasions.
