Canning delighted to silence critics

November 07, 2008
Portumna captain Ollie Canning believes that winning back-to-back titles has silenced anyone who claimed that they were not as good as previous champions. The likes of Athenry and Sarsfields have won back to back titles in recent years and Canning feels that until Portumna achieved a similar feat they would not be regarded as highly as their predecessors. However, they laid that ghost to rest last weekend with their second successive success following the win over Gort and Canning is thrilled to finally have that monkey off their backs. "We felt that there was a doubt in people's minds outside of Portumna about us putting titles back-to-back that we didn't have the hunger to do that," said Canning. "So, it was a motivational factor for us this year and it was something we had to work on. We used that to our advantage. It is a great feeling to win two-in-a-row."
