Cluxton third favourite for RTE award

Kerry's Stephen O'Brien has a shot saved by Dublin goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton

Dublin’s five-in-a-row All-Ireland winning captain and goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton is among the favourites for the 2019 RTE Sportsperson of the Year award.

Cluxton is one of 26 from across the Irish sporting landscape in the running for the prestigious accolade. The list of nominees will be whittled down next Sunday, December 8 and the winner will be announced live on RTE One the following Saturday, December 14 at 9.30pm.

British Open winner Shane Lowry, whose father Brendan won an All-Ireland SFC medal with Offaly in 1982, is the bookies’ favourite at 1/4, with two-weight world boxing champions Katie Taylor priced at 4/1 and Cluxton at 10/1. Tipperary’s All-Ireland winning captain and Hurler of the Year Seamus Callanan is available at 20/1.

Dublin’s ladies football star Sinead Goldrick and Galway camogie ace Niamh Kilkenny are also on the shortlist.
