Who says age matters in hurling; try telling that to Ballysaggart as they prepare for a Munster club IHC final this Sunday.

A 43 and 46 year-old are an integral part of their squad ahead of this weekend’s decider against Cork’s Fr O’Neill’s.

Eugene O’Brien (43) and Matty Meagher (46) have played big parts in the Waterford side’s run to the provincial decider.

It has been well documented about the size of Ballysaggart’s squad as their manager Adrian Meagher told the Waterford News & Star.

“My brother (Matty) had been in goal for 27 years until last year and we had to bring him in corner forward the last day. That will tell you what we are down to. Matty wouldn’t have played outfield much since he was underage. Listen, he was the next best thing we had at 46,” said Meagher.

Of course, Ballysaggart do have the youth and exuberance of the Bennett brothers in their side.

“It’s all hands on deck in Ballysaggart given the scarce playing pool. It’s unreal. You’d want to be there to realise what it’s like. It’s just so small, it’s tiny. We don’t have a heap of bodies but what we have are very spirited.”
