After overcoming a personal battle with cancer, Cavan’s Oisin Kiernan is relishing the opportunity of facing Monaghan in the Ulster SFC this weekend.

Kiernan joined the Breffni County ranks in 2016 after switching his club allegiance from St Brigid’s in Meath to Castlerahan across the border.

His burgeoning football career was put on hold after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer last September but Saturday’s local derby against the Farney County is all that is dominating his thoughts this week.

“I got the all-clear last February so to be able to train and prepare for such a big match that’s coming up is just brilliant,” he told the Anglo Celt. “I feel so thankful and lucky.”

The former Meath U-21 and junior footballer believes the underdog tag will suit Mickey Graham’s men going into the Kingspan Breffni Park encounter.

“They have gotten the better of us in the last few games so we’ll be going in as underdogs which isn’t a bad thing.

“I can’t see it being anything other than a close game and I’m excited just to be part of the whole preparations and, hopefully, the game itself when it comes around.”
