Kieran Martin has hailed the impact that Jack Cooney has made in a short space of time as Westmeath senior football manager.

Cooney became the first native manager of Lake County since Brian Murtagh in 1992 when he got the nod to replace Colin Kelly and the county has claimed O’Byrne Cup and Allianz FL Division 3 honours under his watch so far this year.

Team captain Martin was fulsome in his praise of Cooney and his backroom team in an interview with GAA.ie.

“A manager is a manager at the end of the day, they are all going to bring something different, Jack is something else,” the Maryland clubman commented.

“He is a players man, he would do anything possible for the players. All of the management would do that. If we were stuck anywhere he would be the first man to come to collect you.

“The lads know that and they are willing to go that extra mile for him. He is just after bringing a bond here, which people can see, and we haven't had in years. That helps, you are that bit stronger and groups aren't getting through you as easy.”
