Davy Fitzgerald said his Wexford players were 'in bits' after being run ragged by Galway in the second half of Saturday's Allianz Hurling League quarter-final.

The Model County seemed poised for victory when they took a 3-5 to 0-13 lead into the interval after playing against the wind, but an understrength Galway side took over completely after the restart to run out 3-21 to 3-11 winners. 

"I'd love to be able to tell you what went wrong, I don't know," the Wexford manager said in the Irish Independent.

"I thought we were well in control and we should have been up a lot more in the first half, probably four or five points, but there is no excuse, it has nothing to do with anyone only ourselves.

"Okay, Galway might have upped their game and they ran the ball a good bit more. And when you are against the wind at times you often find you get a bit more space. And I don't think we pushed up on them enough, we let too many of them back the field and be loose. And they were able to run and draw and pass."

He continued: "The boys are in bits in there over it, they're not happy. But it just shows you, that if you stand off a team like Galway you're dead."
