HL1A: Forde points Tipp to the last eight

March 10, 2019

Cork's Cormac Murphy looks to nab possession ahead of Cork's Seamus Callanan

Tipperary put the time they spent away in Alicante at a training camp during the week to good use judging by their performance against Cork in today’s Allianz HL Division 1A clash at Pairc Ui Rinn.

Liam Sheedy’s charges secured a place in the last eight of the competition courtesy of a comprehensive 1-29 to 1-16 victory over the Rebel County.

Jason Forde pointed the way for the winners with a return of 1-13 (1-4 from play) but his participation was brought to a premature end by an ankle injury and the winners will be sweating over his availability ahead of the business end of the league.

Pairc Ui Rinn passed an early morning pitch inspection and the sun was shining on Leeside but a strong wind made life difficult for the home side in the first-half.

The visitors took full advantage of the elements to build up a 10-point advantage (0-16 to 0-6) by the halfway stage.

Then the second-half was only five minutes old when Forde rifled home the Premier County’s goal.

That left the scoreboard reading 1-17 to 0-7 in favour of the Premier County and there was no way back for the Rebels.

Cork’s day went from bad to worse when captain Seamus Harnedy was shown a red card in the 56th minute for a wild swing of the hurl in the direction of James Barry.

The Rebels trailed by 19 points (0-9 to 1-25) at that point.

Full-forward Aidan Walsh pulled a goal back for the team in red and white three minutes later but it was very much a case of too little too late from a Cork perspective.
