Former Wexford All-Ireland winner Eamonn Scallan is set to be named as the new Wicklow senior hurling manager.

Scallan was part of the Wexford side that claimed All-Ireland glory in 1996, while he has carved out a name for himself in management since retiring.

Most notably, he has worked with Wexford underage teams and the Wicklow People state that the players were keen on his appointment.

Waterford native James Quirke was believed to have been the front runner for the post, but it now looks as if Scallan will go forward for ratification.

In the past, Scallan has managed both the Wexford minor and under-21 sides, while this will be his first senior inter-county management role.
