County Board chairman Sean Shanley accepts that Pat Gilroy’s growing work commitments left him unable to continue as Dublin hurling boss.

Gilroy delivered a blow to Dublin GAA on Sunday night when he announced that he’d be quitting as hurling manager just eleven months into his three-year term.

“Saturday was the first that we got of it,” Shanley told The Irish Daily Star. “He was trying to work things round. He just couldn’t – a busy man.

“We tried to work it but no, he would be out of the country too often and he couldn’t give it the commitment that it needed.

“He wouldn’t be able to do the job that he wanted to do. Totally his own decision. There was a bit of progress made last year. Hopefully we can keep it going with a new man. See how things go.”
