Terry Hyland during his tenure as Cavan manager

Terry Hyland has been appointed as Leitrim's new senior football manager following a meeting of the county committee tonight in Ballinamore.

The former Cavan boss takes over from Brendan Guckian, who stood down last month after two seasons in charge following the team's qualifier defeat to Monaghan in Carrick-on-Shannon.

During his four-and-a-half years in charge of Cavan, Hyland steered his native county towards a first ever All-Ireland SFC quarter-final appearance in 2013 before leading them to promotion to Division 1 in 2016.

The Lacken clubman was also over the Breffni County's U21s, winning back-to-back Ulster titles in 2011 and 2012. The former year saw the Blues reaching a first All-Ireland final in the grade since 1996, losing out to Galway in the decider at Croke Park.

Confirmation of Hyland's backroom team is expected in the coming weeks.
