"A strong ref will be needed for May 13!"

Former Mayo manager James Horan believes referee Anthony Nolan should have nipped things in the bud before tempers flared at Pearse Stadium yesterday.

Ugly scenes erupted towards the end of Galway's 1-13 to 0-11 win over their arch rivals and Horan says a stricter approach from the Wicklow whistler would have stamped the indiscipline out.

"Getting involved in spats when the game was gone from them was pointless from Mayo," he wrote in his Irish Daily Star column today.

"The referee could have done better. He flashed a few yellow cards when he could have reached for a red.

"Things got more heated and that led to what we saw at the end of the game."

The two counties will renew acquaintances in the Connacht SFC this summer...

"Two Galway/Mayo games already this year and six red cards, so a strong ref will be needed for May 13!"
