Limerick football pair call it a day

The long-serving Limerick football duo Johnny McCarthy and Seanie Buckley have retired from inter-county duty.

Defender McCarthy made his senior debut 14 years ago and went on to play in Munster SFC finals in 2004, 2009 and 2010. He won a pair of Allianz League Division 4 medals in 2010 and 2013 and was nominated for an All Star award in 2009.

Buckley, who could play in midfield or attack, first joined the senior panel in 2005 and captained the Treaty County to Allianz League Division 4 title wins in 2010 and 2013. Like McCarthy, he made over 40 championship appearances in the green and white jersey.

The pair were notable absentees from the 33-man Allianz League panel announced by manager Billy Lee last night.

"Johnny and Seanie are two of the great players - up there with anything that has played for Limerick," Lee told the Limerick Leader.

"Both have given serious service to Limerick and would be an asset to any set-up."
