Longford manager Denis Connerton has confirmed that long serving defender Dermot Brady has retired from inter-county action.

In doing so, Brady brings the curtain down on a 17-year career which began when he made his debut for the Midlanders in an All-Ireland SFC qualifier clash against Wicklow at Aughrim in June, 2001.

The Longford Slashers clubman did not rejoin the squad for this year's campaign, but the 35-year-old has given massive service to his county over the past two decades.

Speaking to the Longford Leader, Connerton paid tribute to a man that epitomised what it meant to represent their county.

"Dermot Brady, who has given outstanding service to Longford, has not rejoined us for the new season so it looks like he is retiring from the inter-county scene.

"Dermot is a massive loss to us because he gives fantastic leadership qualities and is a player with huge experience, energy and enthusiasm."
