New Louth boss Pete McGrath says getting a handle on his side's capabilities will be priority over the next few weeks ahead of the beginning of their National League campaign.

Last Saturday saw McGrath's charges lose their season opener in the O'Byrne to Longford at the Louth Centre of Excellence in Darver, where the Down native feels goals made all the difference for the visitors.

"When we came back to draw the match, we certainly were on top and we had the momentum to go on and maybe win the match," McGrath is quoted saying by the Irish News.

"But the goal they scored - they went right through the middle of our defence - and then a quick point left us with an uphill battle."

He added: "It would have been nice to win, but for me personally, it's about seeing the progress, seeing what they can do, getting a handle on what the capabilities are, and trying to edge towards what we think will be our strongest team for the start of the league in four weeks' time."
